Marriage Intensives

You and your mate may be wondering whether to begin counseling weekly or schedule a Marriage Intensive. Here are some reasons couples choose a Marriage Intensive:

  • We want the most help we can get in a short amount of time.

Couples who have time constraints and want to work on their relationship quickly prefer to get the most help in a short amount of time. Marriage Intensives are designed to be directly focused on your relationship pattern and are scheduled in blocks of 4 hours over two days (8 hours total) or three days (12 hours total).

  • We want private help from a licensed counselor.

Kristi Burgess is a Licensed Professional Counselor and ICEEFT Certified EFT Therapist. She has been counseling couples for 10 years and uses EFT, which stands for Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy. That means she uses the only research-validated couples therapy that has been shown to help couples find lasting change over time. When you schedule your Marriage Intensive, she will send you pre-intensive questionnaires to help her get to know you and your relationship more quickly. During your intensive, Kristi will work directly with your repetitive cycle to help you understand the factors that drive it and keep it going. Couples who experience EFT tell her that they finally understand their spouse! They learn how to slow down, listen more carefully, and get on the same page.

  • We get into an argument whenever we talk about how our relationship is going.

If you get into an argument each time you discuss your relationship issues, a Marriage Intensive can help you to gain more in less time. During your intensive, Kristi will give you her undivided attention to help you to slow down, give space for each person to share, and focus more on the underlying factors that are driving that argument.

  • We cannot give a whole weekend to attend a couples workshop.

You may have challenges with time constraints due to work or childcare issues. If so, a Marriage Intensive offers you the flexibility to schedule two or three days of 4 hour blocks (these can be consecutive or you can have a day off in-between).

Marriage Intensive Schedule

You can schedule your Marriage Intensive by contacting Kristi directly by email or phone. Let her know your preferred scheduling options.  Here is an example of how EFT (Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy) is used in a Marriage Intensive:

Prior to Your Intensive: Kristi will work with you via free phone and email consultation to schedule the dates you prefer. She will take time to understand your situation and send you pre-intensive questionnaires. By completing your package one week prior to your scheduled intensive, you will save valuable time as you begin your intensive.

Day 1 (4 hours): Meet with Kristi to discuss goals and clarify the process (30 minutes); Joint session to begin unpacking your typical argument pattern (1 hour); Individual sessions to help Kristi understand your particular experiences during conflict (2 hours); Joint session to discuss what each of you have learned throughout Day 1 (30 minutes). Kristi will help you to understand the importance of creating safety and support for one another as you go through this process.

Day 2 (4 hours): Meet with Kristi to continue unpacking your typical argument pattern.  Kristi will focus on the tricky moments that lead you into your cycle and help you to determine what is happening in those initial moments. Important emotions like frustrated, confused, and disrespected are connected to your reactive words and actions. Kristi will help you to name these emotions and link them to the relationship evaluations that drive them ("here we go again," "why can't we get off this merry go round?" "you are not listening to me").

Underneath these evaluations and high level emotions, there are underlying emotions (sad, lonely, rejected) and softer evaluations ("I am losing you," "I cannot please you," "you don't care about me"). During Day 2 of your Marriage Intensive, the focus is on deepening the understanding the two of you have about one another

For some couples, two days is enough time to begin this process and then determine how to continue moving forward in growth. For other couples, three days are needed to learn to slow down, unpack the cycle, and get to the underlying emotions and softer evaluations. If you prefer, Kristi is able to schedule you for three days.

Below are some examples of how to schedule a Marriage Intensive:

Option 1: (two days, 4 hours per day)

Meet with Kristi for two days consecutively or give yourself a day of rest in between. For couples who schedule two day intensives, Kristi can see you on two weekdays or on Saturday and Sunday.

Option 2: (three days, 4 hours per day)

Meet with Kristi for three days consecutively or give yourself a day or two of rest in between. Three day intensives require that one day is scheduled on either Saturday or Sunday.

Marriage Intensive Fees

The fees for a Marriage Intensive are based on the number of blocks you choose. The fee for each 4 hour block is $600, so the two-day rate is $1,200, and the three-day rate is $1,800.

Your payment can be completed online after you schedule your intensive with Kristi. A 50% deposit is required when you book your Marriage Intensive in order to hold your dates. Full payment is required two weeks before you are scheduled to meet with Kristi. The time she gives to thoroughly review your pre-intensive paperwork is included already in your fee.
